Dr David Tuthill, President of the Welsh Paediatric Society and Dr Johann te Water Naude, Honorary Secretary of the Welsh Paediatric Society are pleased to be hosting the Welsh Paediatric Society 50th Anniversary Clinical Meeting 2023 at the Lake Vyrnwy in Powys, Mid Wales. 

 

Dr David Tuthill and Dr Johann te Water Naude would like to invite their paediatric colleagues across Wales and neighbouring deaneries to attend the 2-day clinical meeting from Thursday 15th June to Friday 16th June which will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Welsh Paediatric Society. It will include a dinner followed by live entertainment.

 

The call for abstracts is now open with the deadline being Friday 14th April.

 

Registration is now open and early bird rates are available for WPS members until Friday 18th May.

 

Keynote speakers

Professor John Gregory
Professor John Gregory, Emeritus Professor in Paediatric Endocrinology, Cardiff University

John graduated from Dundee University and trained in paediatric endocrinology in Sheffield, Dundee and Newcastle upon Tyne before appointment to a clinical academic post in Cardiff in 1993 in which he was awarded a Personal Chair in 2005. Until retirement in February 2021, he provided a regional specialised paediatric endocrine service and a diabetes service for children with diabetes living in Cardiff.

He has led a research programme investigating delivery of clinical care to children with diabetes, including evaluating communication skills training for healthcare professionals, examining transition to adult services, investigating how children make choices about healthcare, assessing models of care for children at diagnosis and a randomised controlled trial of multiple daily injections with pumps. He has also used anonymised data linkage of children with newly diagnosed diabetes in Wales (1995-present) to assess long-term outcomes.

John has a longstanding interest in training in Paediatric Endocrinology. On behalf of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) in the past, he has led the Paediatric Endocrine Training Centres for Africa in Nairobi and Lagos & the annual ESPE Winter School targeting trainees in Eastern Europe. In recognition of these contributions, he was awarded ESPE’s Outstanding Clinician Award for 2018. He was Principal Regional Examiner for the Middle-East for the MRCPCH exam for The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. He has authored 154 papers in peer-reviewed journals (H-index 52) and is also co-author of Practical Endocrinology and Diabetes in Children, now published in its fourth edition.

Professor Stephen Turner
Professor Stephen Turner, RCPCH Registrar, President of the Scottish Paediatric Society

Steve was born in Lancashire, England.  He qualified in medicine at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1992 and trained in paediatrics in centres around the North East of England with extended spells in New Zealand and Australia. He has been a consultant paediatrician in Aberdeen since 2003, working as a general paediatrician and a respiratory paediatrician. His research interest include early origins of disease and monitoring asthma. He was given a personal chair by the University of Aberdeen in 2017.  

Steve became RCPCH registrar in April 2021.  He has been a member of the Scottish Paediatric Society (SPS) committee for more than a decade and is currently SPS President.

Professor Jane Noyes
Jane Noyes, D.Phil., MSc., is Professor of Health and Social Services Research and Child Health in the School of Medical and Health Sciences, Bangor University, UK

Jane is Co-Lead of the Wales National Centre for Population Health & Wellbeing Research and the Wales Kidney Research Unit. She is a HCRW Senior Research Leader, methodologist, systematic reviewer and primary researcher with a particular interest in complex interventions and evidence synthesis methodology. Jane was one of the first non-medics to be awarded a MRC Training Fellowship in Health Services Research and Health of the Public. She has been part of Cochrane since the beginning and set up the Qualitative and Implementation Methods Group. Jane currently serves on the Cochrane Editorial Board and Methods Executive. She regularly works with the WHO on developing guidelines and travels frequently to the US to advise key Government departments. She played a leading role in the pandemic evidence response.

When not head down at work she is happiest when renovating a Grade 2 listed farmhouse on Anglesey, growing her own fruit and vegetables, walking the Anglesey coastal path with her partner Peter and two rescue dogs, and driving her vintage and non vintage sports cars.

Dr Chris Course
Dr Chris Course, ST7 Neonatal Grid Trainee in South Wales and a Clinical Research Fellow at Cardiff University School of Medicine

Chris Course is an ST7 Neonatal Grid Trainee in South Wales and a Clinical Research Fellow at Cardiff University School of Medicine. After graduating from Cardiff University in 2011, he started paediatric training in South Wales in 2014, taking an early interest in research. Chris was a co-chair of the Welsh Research and Education Network (WREN), a trainee-led research, QI and audit group from 2014 until 2022, and is currently out-of-programme and in his third year of PhD studies.

His current research activities are focussed on the biological mechanisms underlying short- and long-term respiratory impairments seen as a consequence of preterm birth.

Dr Jonathan Darling
Dr Jonathan Darling

Jonathan is Vice President for Education and Professional Development of the RCPCH. He is also Clinical Associate Professor in Paediatrics and Child Health and Medical Education at the University of Leeds, and Honorary Consultant in General Paediatrics at Leeds General Infirmary. 

He has a longstanding interest in medical education, with expertise in educational management and delivery, curriculum change, assessment (including external examining), and student support. His research interests include: the role of children and young people in clinical teaching and assessment; standard setting in knowledge tests; and technology-enhanced learning. His roles have included Head of Year 4 of the Leeds MBChB programme, Director of Student Support, and (currently) Chair of the Health and Conduct Committee. He is co-author of the paediatric textbook “Lecture Notes: Paediatrics”, and subeditor for the European Mastercourse in Paediatrics. 

Prior to taking up his Vice President role for RCPCH, he was convenor for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Paediatric Educators’ Special Interest Group. In his clinical role, he contributes to acute cover for general paediatric patients, runs an Enuresis Clinic, and is Designated Doctor for Safeguarding Children in Leeds.
 

Dr Graham Shortland OBE
Dr Graham Shortland OBE

Dr Graham Shortland OBE graduated from the University of Southampton and trained clinically in Southampton, Bristol, London and Cardiff.  He was the Executive Medical Director and Board Member, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board between June 2010 to April 2019.

He has significant clinical experience in the field of paediatrics being a Consultant in Paediatric Medicine in Cardiff for over 29 years with experience in Community Paediatrics, General Paediatrics, Paediatric Intensive Care, Regional Neonatal Services and Inherited Metabolic Diseases (IMD). He retired from active clinical work in January 2022. He has held senior positions in UK organisations in the field of IMD including Chair of the British Inherited Metabolic Diseases Group. He is currently Vice-Chair of the UK National Screening Committee having served on a number of other committees implementing new UK-wide blood-spot screening programmes.

He was awarded an OBE in 2020 for services to Paediatrics, Patient Safety and the NHS in Wales.

Recently he has secured significant funding from Welsh Government for a two year pilot for services for patients with suspected rare diseases, a syndrome without a name (SWAN)
